How Often Should My Garden Be Professionally Maintained?

Garden Care Advice

There’s no single right answer to this question — but there is a right way to think about it.

Gardens don’t grow to a calendar. In Melbourne, lawns can need cutting weekly through spring and barely at all in July. Hedges hold their shape when they’re trimmed little and often, and lose it quickly when they’re left for a big annual haircut. Weeds are a five-minute job when they’re caught early and a full day’s work once they’ve seeded.

That’s why the most useful question isn’t “how often should someone visit?” but “what does my garden need to stay ahead of, rather than catch up on?”

A general rule for Melbourne gardens

Through the growing season (roughly September to April), most established gardens do best with a visit every two to four weeks. That keeps lawns at a healthy height, hedges crisp, and weeds from ever getting established.

Through winter, monthly visits are usually enough — growth slows, but leaves still fall, weeds still germinate, and winter is the season for structural pruning and setting the garden up for spring.

Formal gardens — clipped hedging, turf grids, manicured lawns — sit at the more frequent end. Their whole effect depends on clean lines, and even a fortnight of neglect shows.

The pattern that doesn’t work

The long gap followed by the big blitz always costs more, because the visit is spent recovering ground rather than improving the garden — and some things, like a hedge cut back hard into bare wood, can take seasons to undo.

A professional gardener should recommend a frequency based on your garden, not their schedule — and be happy to adjust it as the seasons change.
