Garden Care Advice
A Melbourne garden is really four gardens, one per season — and each asks for something different. Here’s what we focus on across the year in the gardens we care for.
Spring — the season of momentum
Everything grows at once, so the job is keeping up graciously: mowing more frequently as lawns surge, trimming hedges early and often so they thicken rather than sprawl, feeding lawns and beds to fuel the flush, and staying ruthless with weeds while they’re small. Spring is also planting season — the soil is warming and there’s a full growing season ahead for anything that goes in now.
Summer — the season of protection
The priority shifts from growth to resilience. Mow higher, so lawns shade their own roots through heatwaves. Water deeply and less often, which trains roots downward. Deadhead flowering plants to keep them producing, and lean on your mulch — this is the season it earns its keep. Avoid hard pruning in extreme heat; plants under stress need their canopy.
Autumn — the season of renewal
The best-kept secret in Melbourne gardening. The soil is still warm, the stress of summer has passed, and it’s the ideal time to plant trees, shrubs and hedges. It’s also the great clean-up season: clearing leaf fall before it smothers lawns and invites fungal problems, cutting back tired perennials, re-mulching beds and feeding lawns to strengthen them before winter.
Winter — the season of structure
With the leaves down, you can finally see the bones of the garden. Winter is for structural pruning — roses, deciduous trees, wayward shrubs — for planting bare-root stock, for improving soil, and for the planning and preparation that make spring effortless. A garden reset in winter is the single best set-up for the year ahead.
The thread through all four: gardens reward rhythm. A little of the right work, in the right season, beats any amount of catching up.
